Membrane bioreactors combine biological wastewater treatment, such as activated sludge, with membrane processes, such as microfiltration or ultrafiltration. These days, a lot of wastewater treatment facilities in cities and businesses use these technology. The submerged membrane bioreactor and the side stream membrane bioreactor are the two fundamental membrane bioreactor configurations. In a side stream membrane bioreactor, the membrane is placed outside the reactor as a final step following biological treatment, but in the immersed configuration, the membrane is situated inside the biological reactor and submerged in the effluent.
