Water filtration is one of the most common uses for granular activated carbon. Its function is to retain organic pollutants and to eliminate the free residual chlorine that remains in the water after the disinfection step through a chemical reaction. Because free chlorine is removed from the carbon bed in the first few centimeters, there is no longer any protection against bacterial development in the rest of the bed. Bacteria can enter at some point in the effluent pipe or from an inadequately cleaned influent. This is most likely to occur when there is no water circulation and the equipment is out of operation. Bacteria multiply and make the carbon bed a source of contamination. To limit bacterial development, the surface of the carbon is impregnated with 0.1% metallic silver to make carbon bacteriostatic. Ionic silver is then used to bind strongly with the carbon surface, allowing it to function and filter huge volumes of water.
