Ion-exchange resins used in water softening are used to replace the calcium and magnesium ions present in hard water. Regenerating the resin requires washing it with salt (NaCl). Until a new equilibrium is formed, sodium ions from the solution replace the calcium and magnesium ions that migrate off the resin. Pure water is created and most minerals are retained within the resin thanks to the presence of both cation and anion resins in mixed bed resins. Strong base anion resins that are macroporous and specifically engineered to eliminate nitrates from water for use in potable processes are known as nitrate removal resins.

Food-grade, very basic, macroporous type I anion exchange resin based on polystyrene, scavenger resin is appropriate in chloride form for the decolorization of the following juices:
  1. Fluids from the processing of sugar, particularly beet sugar
  2. A mixture of organic compounds, such as amino acids and glycerine
