Instruments that measure conductivity directly in microsiemens (micromhos) or millisiemens (1000 microsiemens) are calibrated using KCl Standard Solution. An international calibration standard for measuring conductivity is potassium chloride (KCl), a salt that is incredibly stable. Mold-resistant and accurate to within +0.01 pH units at 25°C are pH Buffer Solutions 4, 7, and 10. The color-coded Myron L® Buffers allow for quick identification and may be traced back to NIST-certified pH values.
When determining the parts per million of total dissolved solids (ppm/TDS) in boilers, cooling towers, reverse osmosis systems, etc., conductivity instruments are a practical tool. There are situations when a direct reading in ppm/TDS is desired, even if the microsiemens/cm (sometimes called micromhos/cm) is the International Unit (SI) of measuring conductivity.
