To determine the possible risks of brittle fracture, Ascent Engineering was asked to carry out a study. The request was made in response to our client's suggestion that a thorough evaluation be carried out in accordance with Part 3 of API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 2016. In the absence of comprehensive blowdown pressure/temperature profiles, the FFS Level 1 analysis took a cautious stance by utilizing the lowest temperature and highest pressure for the combined load.

Using exclusive Caesar II V12 software, a thorough pipe stress analysis served as the basis for determining the combined longitudinal stress ratio, or SR-3. Isometrics and other client-provided materials were used to rebuild the Caesar models. The FFS Level 1 assessments SR1 and SR2 were calculated conservatively, taking into account the coldest scenario temperature and the maximum scenario pressure acting simultaneously.
Concurrent temperature and pressure combinations along the blowdown curve were used to calculate the SR1 and SR2 ratios for the FFS Level 2 analysis. If the calculated values of SR1 and SR2 do not qualify the material for use at the scenario temperature, there is no need for further analysis, and lines are considered to have failed the FFS Level 1 assessment. For lines that made it past this point, Caesar II stress analysis was used to calculate the maximum longitudinal stress for the final SR-3 computation.
