Moving bed biofilm reactor
Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is an advanced wastewater treatment technology, which employs the benefits of both biofilms and activated sludge processes for highly efficient wastewater treatment. Developed in the 1980s, MBBR has been established in the last two decades worldwide as a simple, robust, flexible, and compact wastewater technology for both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.
Biocarriers MBBR
Plastic carriers of different shapes and surface areas have been developed and used as biofilm substrates in MBBR systems. The shape, density, protective area, and void volume of the carriers are important factors that influence the performance of the MBBR process. Carriers can consist of different shapes, such as square, round and spherical. The shape affects the strength, shear, and collision conditions of the carrier. The density of the carrier is usually lower than water, about 0.98 kg/l, so it can be suspended in wastewater with biofilm attached without introducing strong mixing. Depending on the shape and internal structure, the protective area of the carrier varies from 300 to more than 1000 m2/m3. Larger protective areas of carriers usually imply high complexity of the carrier structure and higher production costs. Carriers with a protected area of 500-1000 m2/m3 are usually used in full-scale wastewater treatment plants due to their cost and process advantages. Two different types of plastic carriers are available, which are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and each has a protective area of 650 and 828 m2/m3. and keep the active organisms in a thin layer. Well-designed carriers allow for a stable biofilm during the MBBR process so that voids are not easily blocked by wastewater particles or excessive biofilm build-up. Effective mixing/aeration combined with a good carrier design results in good system performance and low maintenance requirements.
