Wastewater treatment has developed over time, and specialists are looking for novel solutions to make procedures more reliable and efficient. Oxygenation emerges as a pure environmental aid, providing a comprehensive solution to improve treatment plants.
Why is oxygen important?

  • Microbial activity: Microorganisms are used in wastewater treatment to degrade organic materials and contaminants. These microorganisms, primarily bacteria, require oxygen to grow and thrive. They cannot accomplish their jobs properly if there is insufficient oxygen, resulting in inadequate treatment and potential environmental harm.
  • Treatment procedures: Oxygenation is essential in many wastewater treatment processes, especially in the secondary treatment step known as the activated sludge process. In this stage, oxygen is bubbled into the wastewater to keep a healthy bacteria population in the "activated sludge." These bacteria degrade organic debris and contaminants, producing harmless byproducts such as water and carbon dioxide.
How is Oxygen added?
Adding oxygen is critical for biological wastewater treatment because it stimulates microorganisms that degrade organic materials. Here are a few common methods:
Physical Aeration.

  • The most frequent way is to utilize diffusers or mixers to create bubbles and raise oxygen levels, much like a whisker aerates milk.
Pure Oxygen Injection
  • More efficient than air aeration, this method injects pure oxygen straight into the water, resulting in higher oxygen concentrations but at a higher cost.
Membrane Aeration.
  • Fine membranes allow oxygen to diffuse from the air into wastewater, increasing energy efficiency and making them suitable for smaller treatment plants.

Advantages of Proper Oxygenation
Improved treatment efficiency.

  • Adequate oxygen levels guarantee that bacteria function optimally, resulting in more effective contaminant breakdown and cleaner treated wastewater.
Reduced Odor
  • Anaerobic decomposition, which happens in the absence of oxygen, generates foul-smelling gases such as hydrogen sulphide. Proper oxygenation eliminates these odors and improves the overall therapy experience.
Improved Sludge Settling.
  • Good oxygenation encourages healthy bacterial growth, which results in larger and denser flocs (bacterial clumps). These flocs settle more easily, easing the solids separation procedure in the treatment plant.
Environmental protection.
  • Effective wastewater treatment with adequate oxygenation protects receiving waters from dangerous pollutants, hence safeguarding aquatic ecosystems and human health.
Nutrient Elimination:
Some bacteria may eliminate nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater, two major contaminants that can contribute to dangerous algal blooms. These specialized bacteria require oxygen to function properly.
