The Ras Ghareb Wind Farm is a groundbreaking 262.5 MW renewable energy project in Egypt. Developed on a build-own-operate (BOO) model with a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement, it is the country’s first of its kind. Orascom Construction served as the EPC contractor for the civil and electrical works and holds a 20% stake in the project. The company showcased its expertise by completing the construction and commissioning 45 days ahead of a 24-month schedule. Key milestones included completing all 125 wind turbine foundations 73 days ahead of schedule and energizing the substation 31 days early, which allowed for a partial start of commercial operations in June 2019. The project was completed with a strong safety record of over 3.5 million man-hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI).
The project secured non-recourse financing from a consortium of international financial institutions, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Société Générale, with support from Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI). Commercial International Bank (CIB) provided working capital, while Attijariwafa Bank supplied an equity bridge loan to Orascom Construction.
