The New Capital Combined Cycle Power Plant is one of the world's largest gas-fired combined cycle power plants, with a capacity of 4,800 MW. The project involved the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of four power modules, each with a 1,200 MW capacity. Each module consists of two 400 MW gas turbines and one 400 MW steam turbine, along with all associated auxiliaries. The generated electricity is fed to the 500 KV grid via a Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) switchyard. The comprehensive scope covered all stages, including design, engineering, fabrication, material delivery, erection, testing, commissioning, and startup. Orascom Construction (OC), in a joint venture with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), was responsible for the entire EPC work. The collaboration also extended to testing, pre-commissioning, and commissioning, which was performed jointly with the OEM that supplied the turbines and heat recovery steam generators (HRSG).
As part of a consortium with Siemens, Orascom Construction completed this plant and the Burullus Combined Cycle Power Plant, delivering a combined total of 9,600 MW of power generation capacity to Egypt. The New Capital plant was completed in record time, setting a new standard for fast-track power projects despite challenging site conditions. The project also achieved a significant safety milestone of 47.4 million man-hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI).
