Butterfly valves are valves that can be used to isolate or regulate flow. The shutdown mechanism takes the form of a disk. Operates like a ball valve and closes quickly. Butterfly valves are generally preferred because they cost less than other valve designs and are lighter, which means less support is required. The disc is in the center of the pipe, and a rod that goes through the disc is connected to the actuator on the outside of the valve. Rotating the actuator can make the disc parallel or perpendicular to the flow. Unlike ball valves, the disc is always present in the flow and therefore always causes a pressure drop in the flow regardless of valve position.
