The most accurate membrane liquid separation process is reverse osmosis. To counteract the natural osmotic pressure, the concentrated solution and the intake water are subjected to an operating pressure. Water molecules naturally penetrate the flow when the operating pressure, which is higher than the natural osmotic pressure, is dropped on the concentrated solution's side. The water molecules in the influent concentrated solution will travel in the opposite direction and cross the reverse osmosis membrane to become purified water on the side of the diluted solution. All soluble salts and organic compounds with a molecular weight larger than 100 can be blocked by reverse osmosis equipment, although water molecules can still pass through. The salt rejection rate of reverse osmosis composite membranes is often higher than 98%.
