Housed in a freestanding sheet steel box, the Siemens SIMOVACTM medium-voltage non-arc-resistant and SIMOVAC-ARTM arc-resistant controllers feature a modular design that accommodates up to two 12SVC400 (400 A) controllers. A non-load-break isolating switch, three current-limiting fuses, and a fixed-mounted vacuum contactor (plug-in type optional for 12SVC400) are all included with each UL 347 class E2 controller. The equipment can be positioned with its back against a non-flammable wall because the enclosure is made for front access.
Common types of controllers:

  1. FVNR, or full-voltage non-reversing
  2. Reversing the full voltage (FVR)
  3. Two-winding, two-speed (2S2W)
  4. One winding, two speeds (2S1W)
  5. Autotransformer with reduced voltage (RVAT)
  6. Soft-start or solid-state reduced-voltage starter (SSRVS).
Controllers for medium-voltage motors come in the following varieties:
Non-gasketed type 1
  1. Type 1 gasketed (just for the rear panels)
  2. Drip resistant type 2 (only SIMOVAC non-arc resistant)
  3. SIMOVAC non-arc-resistant only, type 3R
  4. Dust-tight Type 12 (only non-arc-resistant SIMOVAC).

Common applications for feeders and motors:

  1. Soft-start, multi-speed, reversing, and non-reversing squirrel-cage induction motors
  2. Transformer feeder
  3. Feeders for power buses (tie).

The following characteristics of a motor controller include:

  1. arc-resistance of SIMOVAC-AR was evaluated in accordance with IEEE C37.20.7, type 2B.
  2. Meeting UL 347 6th edition requirements (the same as CSA C22.2 No. 253-09) (The 720 A SSRVS controller does not have a UL or cUL listing.)
  3. 720 A bolt-in vacuum contactor or 400 A bolt-in or stab-in (optional)
  4. Non-load-break isolation switch, 400 A or 720 A
  5. 7.65 kV, 2.4 kV, 4.16 kV, and 6.9 kV ratings for system voltages
  6. Main buses with conventional epoxy insulation on bus bars and optional boots for insulating joints are 1,200, 2,000, 3,000, or 4,000 A.
  7. There are buses that are plated with tin or silver.
  8. Front-accessible
  9. Supported and braced to 63 kA two-second short-time capability are the main bus and ground bus.
  10. To save on site installation time, a top-mounted pressure relief channel is shipped installed.
  11. There is no need to open the panel door because the isolation switch is clearly visible through the viewing window to confirm that the power cell is isolated from the line-side source.
  12. When the isolation switch is closed, the low-voltage compartment is separated from the medium-voltage compartment by a mechanical interlock with the access door that prevents user access to the primary compartment.
  13. Because every component is front accessible, routine inspections and part replacements are made easier.
  14. It is simple to remove the contactor assembly, isolating switch assembly, and current-limiting fuses from the enclosure.
  15. For convenient installation and extension, the main bus compartment is accessible from the top, side, and front.
