The operation of MIXED BED
Water is introduced into the mixed bed. Positively charged cations flow over cation resin beads, where they are exchanged for hydrogen (H+), which has a weak affinity to the cation resin bead. Negatively charged anions flow over anion resin beads, where they are exchanged for hydroxyl (OH-), which has a low affinity for the anion resin bead. Anion resin is regenerated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), while cation resin is regenerated with hydrochloric acid (HCl).

Applications of MIXED BED

  1. Production of ultrapure water
  2. Plants for demineralization
  3. Water used in boilers
  4. Pharmaceuticals and other diverse applications

Characteristics of MIXED BED

  1. Strong acid Cation (SAC) exchange resin and strong base Anion (SBA) exchange resin make up the mixed bed.
  2. Because cation resin possesses a negative functional group, it attracts positively charged ions.
  3. Because anion resin has a positive functional group, it attracts negatively charged ions.
  4. HCl is used to regenerate cation resin.
  5. Because hydrogen is positively charged, it binds to the negatively charged cation resin bead.
  6. NaOH is used to renew anion resin.
  7. Because hydroxyl is negatively charged, it binds to the positively charged anion resin bead.
