Anthracite coal was utilized as a filter mineral at the start of the 20th century. It underwent a number of processes to ensure that it was generated in the right sizes, uniformities, and hardness. Compared to filter sand, less backwash is needed because of its inclined shape. There is also a significant reduction in reverse rinsing. It acts as the top layer of multilayer filters due to its extremely low density.
 Conditions OF Application
The recommended bed height is 25–46 cm for multiple media filters and 60–76 cm for single media filters. Reverse rinsing 1 and 1.5 anthracite can result in a service charge of up to 25 gpm/ft2. Number 2 anthracite should also be added with the option of an air backwash. The service charge may exceed 5 gpm/ft2 based on local conditions.
