At the moment, the most sophisticated ion-exchange technology is electro deionization. Continuous production of (ultra)pure water is possible with this technology. This advanced technology can be used in industries like pharmaceuticals, power plants, and process industries. Reverse osmosis water is typically post-treated with an EDI unit.
Electrodeionization (EDI) is a water treatment method that uses electricity, ion exchange membranes, and resin to remove ionized species from water. Electrodialysis and ion exchange technology are carefully combined to achieve the goal of purifying water: ion movement is accelerated by ion exchange resin and selective resin membranes, while charged ions in the water are driven to move by high-voltage electrodes at both ends.
