A multi-media filter (also known as a mechanical filter) is a type of filter that uses a bed of stacked anthracite, sand, finely divided garnet, or another substance. The machine's top layer contains the lightest and coarsest grades of material, while the heaviest and finest grades are located in the lower portion of the bed. The idea is depth filtration, which removes larger particles from the water in the top layer while removing smaller particles in the deeper levels of the filter medium. So that the water quality meets the norm following coarse filtration.
The apparatus is pressure-type. The principle is that when raw water passes through the filter material from top to bottom, the suspended solids in the water are trapped by the surface of the filter layer due to adsorption and mechanical resistance. The sand particles in the water are arranged more closely, so that the particles in the water have more opportunities to collide with the sand particles, so the flocs, suspended solids, and the surface of the sand particles in the water adhere to each other. The filtered effluent suspension can be less than 5 mg/L.

Multimedia Filtration System Characteristics:
1. Porous media filters are widely employed in water treatment procedures and can be utilized alone; however, the majority of them serve as pre-filtration for advanced water quality treatment (exchange resin, electrodialysis, reverse osmosis).
2. A multi-media filter is a popular pretreatment device for deep water purification, and various filter materials can be added depending on the process requirements.
3. The multi-media filter can be constructed of glass fiber reinforced plastic, A3 steel anti-corrosion, rubber-lined, or stainless steel. There are two modes of operation: automatic and manual. The automatic control system uses an automatic controller imported from the United States to control pneumatic and hydraulic valves. It is straightforward to use and maintain. It is commonly utilized in pre-treatment devices for water treatment procedures in all areas of life.
4. The filter material of a multi-media filter (including a double filter material filter) should be chemically stable, with each medium's relative density and particle size differing to some amount. The double-layer filter material consists of anthracite and quartz sand filters. The relative density of anthracite used in filter is 1.4-1.6, particle size is 0.8-1.8mm, and relative density of quartz sand is 2.6-2.65, particle size is 0.5-1.2mm; a 3-layer filter material filter is in addition to the above two. Heavy ores, such as manganese sand and magnetite, with a relative density of 4.7-5.0 and particle size of 0.5-4mm, can also be utilized as filter material.
